| In the eighties, Matt Foley ramped up as an art activist, organizing exhibitions and promoting the work of other artists pusuing diverse expressions. He founded the Nepenthe Mundi Society -- an organization comprised of artists, art historians, teachers, citics and other professionals -- and began the Emerald City Classic - an international art competition that provided recognition to outstanding artists in a variety of fields. Although the Emerald City Classic (the name has been appropriated by a Seattle vent two decades later) was decidely before its time in many respects -- such as being based solely on the documentation of artwork -- it proved to be a mark of high status for many emerging or established artists who needed that level of critical acclaim and encouragement, something many are still very proud of.
