MATT FOLEY - from mild to wild
"We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth." - John F. Kennedy, October 26, 1963
April, 2008 - The San Diego Fine Art Society is launching a Phantom Galleries Project based on the 10-year project by artist, Matt Foley (from 1990 - 2000).

"The San Diego Fine Art Society will soon be transforming empty storefront windows into Phantom Galleries filled with colorful art displays you can view as you walk by. The Phantom Art Gallery concept, first launched in 1990 in Wichita, Kansas by artist, C. Matthew Foley, is based on artists coming together to make street level downtown windows come alive with colorful exhibits and installations."
Phantom Art Gallery
<= Downtown Wichita, Kansas, was filled with empty storefronts in the early 1990's. Pictured here is the former location of Innes, Macy's and Dillard's department stores. After Dillard's closed its doors, Foley filled the 3 blocks of display windows with large paintings and sculptures by various artists.
From February 2008 - "Family Jewels" - recent works by artist, Matt Foley in an ongoing rotation at Lather, 5422 E. Central, Wichita, Kansas. The work is also viewable at Lather's Final Friday art events (which is usually listed in the Wichita Eagle's Friday issue).

March 2008 - 2 paintings were provided to the teen division at the Wichita Children's Home. A presentation was held on Thursday, March 6, 2008. District 1 Councilwoman, Lavonta Williams was in attendance along with WCH Executive Director, Sarah Robinson, WCH Volunteer Coordinator, Beth Thummel, staff and other dignitaries including League of Women Voters' Co-President, Ellen Estes. The WCH provided a cake, and it was a lovely event.

"When people are faced with crisis, especially if they are disadvantaged in any number of ways, an encounter with art may provide an encouraging window of hope to a better and brighter future," Foley says, "at least that is the basis of inspiration for this endeavor. This might be thought of as a kind of strategic life edification, art as a transformative tool, a statement that the 'viewer' is worth my efforts on their behalf."

"These paintings are meant to have a level of public appeal and to project a sentiment that, hopefully, most will enjoy. In these paintings, I have tried to minimize the 'high art' snoot factor," Foley admitted.

"If painting was good enough for cavemen, it's certainly good enough for all of us in these modern times," Foley emphasizes.

Two of the four paintings from the "Women of the World" series sent to GraceMed Clinic. Acrylic on canvas, 16"w x 20"h
December, 2007 - January, 2008 - GraceMed Health and Dental Clinics have been recipients of paintings by artist, Matt Foley. The motivation was to provide an enhancement to people that find themselves in challenging life circumstances.

4 paintings from "Women of the World" series by Foley were provided to GraceMed's dental clinic. The paintings given to GraceMed are part of a series of paintings of women meant to reflect global origins and ethnic diversity - reflecting the client base of the clinic.

"Few things are more painful than a toothache," the artist says, "Perhaps these will distract the sufferer temporarily."
